LIFE WASTE2COAG - BRINE AND METAL WASTES VALORIZATION TO PRODUCE COAGULANTS FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT




DESCRIPCIÓN

Reverse osmosis (RO) and ion exchange (IE) are perceived as viable and feasible solutions to address scarcity of freshwater, through seawater desalination and wastewater reuse, and to provide required quality water for industrial processes (automotive, food&beverage, pharmaceutical, etc.). In RO and IE feed water is separated into two streams, water and high salinity brines typically treated as a waste. It is estimated that there are 15,906 operating desalination plants (DPs) in the world, generating around 142 million m3/day of brines. The European Union (EU) and Spain represent 9.2 and 5.7% of the total facilities, respectively.
Brines are mostly disposed of in the environment without treatment via discharge in water surfaces, sewers, deep-well injection, evaporation ponds and land application or in wastewater treatment plants.
On the other hand, the growing demand for metals has led to resource scarcity, price increases and environmental impacts resulting from both demand and the unsustainable management of metal waste. The EU produces only around 3% of the raw materials needed to sustain a growing demand for metals.
In this sense, there is a clear need for solutions that adopt a new model of resource efficiency and circular economy, based on the valorization of brines and metal waste to produce coagulants for wastewater treatment and contribute to protecting the environment.
The electrolytic technology to be applied is operated with renewable energies, turning the process into a fully sustainable process based on the use of waste as raw materials and renewable energies.

OBJETIVOS

The present project aims to demonstrate a viable and cost-effective solution for brine and metal waste valorization for the production of a sustainable coagulant as an alternative to commercial ones. The product will be used in water facilities, ensuring the use of resource efficient processes for the provision of water services. The electrolytic technology to be applied is operated with renewable energy, turning the process into a completely sustainable process based on the use of wastes as raw materials and renewable energy.

The general objective of the project is the demonstration of an innovative and cost-efficient technology based on the electrolysis of wastes in order to produce coagulants for the removal of pollutants in wastewaters, including emerging pollutants and pathogens. The concentration of coagulant will be modified on demand, as well as the chemical nature of the inorganic salt with a simple polarity inversion to obtain different product formulations. These products will be applied to secure high-quality effluents in urban and industrial WWTPs.
Industrial scrap metallic wastes and brines generated in different industries, including WWTPs and DPs will be valorised. Therefore, the project boosts the circular economy in water treatment plants and creates synergies with other sectors. Electrolysis will be applied in maximum efficiency conditions, using renewable energy, thanks to the use of residues with high conductivity, favouring sustainability.
